Woodside Sanctuary’s wonderful Residents and Staff
The multi-disciplinary Learning Support team - Stimulation Therapists/OT, Remedial Teachers, Physiotherapists, Care Workers, and Social Worker - perform vital roles in the learning and stimulation of residents, to maximise their capability through tailored learning programmes customised to each resident’s individual development, physical, and psycho-social well-being needs. Without their hard work and dedication, those in our care would be unable to reach their full potential.
Today, Woodside Sanctuary is home to 84 residents, ranging in age from 3 to over 67 years, who are unable to remain within the family unit. As a place of safety and centre of excellence in holistic total care for profoundly intellectually and physically disabled children and adults, Woodside offers:
24-hour residential nursing care with multi-stimulation, tailored learning and well-being programmes (mental/ intellectual, physical, social, nutritional)
Respite care and day-care relief to families who care for their loved-ones in their own homes

Woodside Sanctuary’s vision is to contribute towards the Social Development of South Africa’s disability services.
Woodside is a place of learning for improved skills in the care of those living with profound intellectual and physical disability. Flow on benefits in the sector include:
expanded disability awareness and quality of care standards for the disabled in the community
enhanced skills for those trained through Woodside, equipping them for improved employment opportunities.
The focus is on continuous improvement of its services, and professional development of staff to sharpen skills. Acknowledged for 'best practice care’ of the mentally and physically disabled, Woodside shares its knowledge, skills, and expertise through providing:
practical training for Care Workers from GemMed and White Stone College (course required hours for Practical Placement)
supervision for WITS Social Work Students (and in some years Occupational Therapy (OT) students) completing their coursework practical requirements through the Sanctuary
outreach education programmes for Care Workers in the healthcare field, and other NGOs and CBOs in the sector.
Students have access to the multidisciplinary team - including medical (General Practitioner and Consultant Psychiatrist), the General Manager, Nursing Service Manager, Professional Nurses, Stimulation Therapists, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapists, Care Workers, and Social Worker – which broadens skills in the sector to care for people with profound intellectual and physical disabilities, and community awareness about Woodside Sanctuary.
